Less than three weeks to Independence Day! What better time to think about the faith and courage that built this nation? One of the things I love about historical fiction is the way it lets us imagine what life might have been like in a different time and place. So I am thrilled to partner with three other Christian historical fiction authors to offer a book giveaway exploring the years just prior to the War for Independence. (US entrants only, please.)

Enter to win a signed copy of four Christian historical novels highlighting faith and freedom at America’s founding:

  • The Shenandoah Road by Lynne Basham Tagawa
  • An Uncommon Woman by Laura Frantz
  • Many Sparrows by Lori Benton
  • Preacher on the Run by Jayna Baas

The giveaway begins on June 19, and the winner will be announced on July 4. All entrants will receive a list of historical fiction recommendations from the participating authors. By entering this giveaway, you’ll receive emails from the participating authors and may also receive reminders from the giveaway service, KingSumo. (Those don’t come from me, and you can unsubscribe from them after the giveaway.)

Here’s a look at the books in the giveaway:

The Shenandoah Road by Lynne Basham Tagawa

You may have seen me mention this book, one of my favorite reads a year or two ago. John Russell’s heart aches from the loss of his wife, but he needs to marry again for his daughter’s sake. At first he believes he has found the right young woman, but his faith falters as the Great Awakening spreads and time reveals she isn’t quite what she seemed. Abigail Williams obeys the Commandments, and she thinks herself a Christian until a buckskin-clad newcomer courts her—and introduces her to a sermon by the controversial preacher George Whitefield.

I’ll be sharing an interview with Lynne Tagawa next week and am excited to talk with her about how she crafted a novel so filled with history and deep Christian truth!

Content warnings: romance, violence, mentions of marital intimacy

An Uncommon Woman by Laura Frantz

Laura Frantz never fails to amaze me with her evocative writing style, and An Uncommon Woman brings 1770 to life. Born and bred on the western Virginia frontier along with her five brothers, Tessa Swan is a force to be reckoned with. Raised by Lenape Indians, Clay Taggart returns a hero from the French and Indian War to the fort that bears his name, bringing with him Tessa’s long-lost friend, Keturah, a redeemed Indian captive like himself. Determined to avoid any romantic entanglements as fort commander, Clay remains aloof whenever he encounters the lovely Tessa. But when she is taken captive by the tribe Clay left, his hand—and heart—are forced, leading to one very private and one very public reckoning.

Content warnings: Romance, alcohol, violence, implied marital intimacy

Many Sparrows by Lori Benton

Lori Benton also has a rare talent for weaving a lyrical historical tale, and I love that this book focuses on Lord Dunmore’s War, a part of history I’ve rarely seen in fiction. In 1774, the Ohio-Kentucky frontier pulses with rising tension and brutal conflicts. The Inglesby family is making the perilous journey west when an accident forces Philip to leave his pregnant wife Clare and their four-year old son Jacob on a remote mountain trail. When Philip does not return and Jacob disappears, Clare awakens to find herself utterly alone, in labor, and wondering how she can reclaim her son from the Shawnee Indians now holding him captive. When frontiersman Jeremiah Ring comes to her aid, can he convince Clare that recovering her son will require the very thing she is unwilling to do—be still, wait and let God fight this battle for them?

Content warnings: violence, childbirth, frank mentions of breastfeeding and partial nudity among Native American men and women, mild romance and pretense of marriage for the sake of protection

Preacher on the Run by Jayna Baas

You probably know about this one already! It’s 1771, and North Carolina is at war. Former circuit rider Robert Boothe has spent the last four years leading the tyrant-hating Regulators against North Carolina’s corrupt British government. All he wants is a safe place for his little Baptist church to worship God. But when Colonel Charles Drake arrives in town, Robert becomes a target. The Church of England wants him to shut up. The governor wants him dead.

Content warnings: violence, mild romance between a married couple
